Is there a working holiday visa for New Zealanders in the USA?

If you've googled "working holiday visa USA New Zealand"...
you've probably noticed something odd. Nothing useful comes up. New Zealand has working holiday agreements with the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland and a good handful of other countries, but not with the United States. That's not a gap in your search skills, it's a gap in the system, and it trips up a lot of Kiwis who assume the US works the same way as everywhere else.
Why there's no NZ-US working holiday visa
Working holiday schemes are built on reciprocal agreements between two governments. New Zealand and Australia let each other's young people come and work casually for a year because both countries signed up to that deal. The US hasn't signed an equivalent agreement with New Zealand, and it doesn't really run a general working holiday visa category the way NZ, Australia and the UK do with each other.
That leaves a genuine question mark for anyone picturing a loose, pick-up-work-as-you-go summer in America. It doesn't exist as a visa category here, no matter how the search results are worded.
The route that actually exists: the J1 visa
What does exist is the J1 Exchange Visitor Visa, and specifically its camp counsellor category. It's issued by the US Department of State, and it's the legal pathway that lets New Zealanders work at a summer camp in America for a season. Rather than open-ended casual work, it's a structured cultural exchange programme, tied to a specific role with a specific camp for a set period.
That structure is exactly why it works as well as it does. You're not left to find your own job and hope a visa follows. AmeriCamp NZ sponsors the visa, matches you to a camp, and manages the process end to end, which is a very different experience to trying to piece together casual US work authorisation on your own.
"But is this actually a proper visa?"
Fair question, and worth asking plainly rather than glossing over. Yes. The J1 is a real, government-issued visa under a long-running US Exchange Visitor Program, not a workaround or a grey area. American summer camps have used it to bring in international staff for decades.
For New Zealand applicants, the process runs through the US Consulate in Auckland, so there's no need to fly anywhere just to get the paperwork sorted. Joe, who went through the AmeriCamp NZ process, described it like this:
"Everyone was super friendly and easy to approach. Any enquiries they explained to me perfectly and knew exactly how to help me if I was stuck on parts of the application process." Joe, verified Trustpilot review
What it actually looks like day to day
Camp season in America runs June to August, which lines up neatly with the New Zealand winter you'd otherwise be sitting through at home. Standard counsellors earn a guaranteed minimum of $2,250 USD for the season, premium counsellors with specialist skills earn a guaranteed minimum of $2,350 USD, and food and accommodation are provided by the camp on top of that.
Visa places are allocated first-come, first-served rather than against a fixed closing date, and background checks can take up to ten weeks to clear, so applying early genuinely matters here. None of this is automatic. You'll still need to get through the AmeriCamp Interview, a relaxed 20-minute conversation rather than a test, and pass the screening process before anything is confirmed.
What if I get the paperwork wrong
It's a reasonable worry. Visa terminology is dense, and working out which category applies to you isn't something most 21-year-olds have had to do before. But you're not working through a government website alone at midnight trying to decode it.
Guiding people through exactly this confusion is most of what AmeriCamp NZ actually does. One applicant, going by "Tkw", put it plainly in a review:
"The customer service is second to none, they provided clear, step-by-step instructions at every stage. I'm definitely someone who calls up with 'ridiculous' questions, but the team was always attentive and reassuring."
There's no such thing as a working holiday visa for New Zealanders in the USA, and no amount of searching will turn one up. What does exist is a legitimate, well-established route through the J1 visa, built specifically around a summer camp in America, and it's one AmeriCamp NZ has been running Kiwis through for over 24 years.
AmeriCamp NZ is run out of Auckland by the NZ AmeriCamp team - International Working Holidays. We're backed by over 24 years of placing New Zealanders at summer camps across the USA. The application is free to start and our NZ team is with you every step of the way.
