The Biggest Myths About AmeriCamp NZ - and What's Actually True

Most people who end up applying to AmeriCamp NZ spent a few weeks talking themselves out of it first. They weren't sure they were the right fit, thought it might cost too much, or just figured they'd look into it later. If that sounds familiar, this post is for you. Here's what you can actually expect - and let's bust the Americamp myths.
What to should you really expect when you apply
The process starts with a free application on the AmeriCamp NZ website. From there, our Auckland-based team will be in touch to schedule your interview - a relaxed 20-minute conversation where we get to know you and figure out where you'd be the best fit. It's not a test, and there's no script you need to memorise. We're looking for genuine people with energy and care for others, not a perfect CV. Once you're matched to a camp, we handle your J1 Exchange Visitor Visa sponsorship, insurance, and support right through to the end of your season. You'll head over in June, spend the NZ winter at camp - living on-site with food and accommodation fully covered - and finish up in August with a guaranteed minimum of $2,250 USD in your pocket as a standard counsellor, or $2,350 USD as a premium counsellor.
Five myths worth clearing up
These are the most common things people believe before they apply - and why none of them should stop you.
1. Myth: "It's only for people with special skills"
The reality
Specialist skills like sport, music, or outdoor education can qualify you as a premium counsellor - but they're not a requirement. Most counsellors are placed as generalists. What camps need most is people who are reliable, warm, and genuinely good with kids. If you've got that, you've got what it takes.
2. Myth: "You need prior childcare experience"
The reality
Formal childcare qualifications aren't required. Coaching a junior sports team, babysitting regularly, volunteering with youth, or even just having younger siblings counts. Camps train you for the role - they want the right person, not the right paperwork.
3. Myth: "It's too expensive to apply"
The reality
The application itself is free to start. AmeriCamp NZ keeps its programme fees among the lowest in the market - deliberately - because we think more of your money should make it to camp with you. And once you're there, food and accommodation are fully covered for the season.
4. Myth: "The camps are in the middle of nowhere"
The reality
Camps are spread across the USA - from the forests of New England to the mountains of Colorado and beyond. And after the season ends, your J1 visa gives you time to travel. Most counsellors use their earnings to explore the US before heading home. That's part of the appeal.
5. Myth: "It's just babysitting"
The reality
Camp is a full leadership role. You're responsible for a group of kids around the clock, running activities, managing dynamics, solving problems on the fly, and being a genuine role model. It's one of the most challenging and rewarding things you can put on a CV - and employers know it.
"It was an opportunity to help other people while having the best summer and experiencing a different country."
- Sophie, Special Needs Camp Counsellor, Iowa
The myths are busted. You don't need special skills, a childcare certificate, or a big budget to get to camp. What you do need is to apply early - the next move is yours. The application is open, the team is local, and the season fills up faster than most people expect.
