What happens to your job, flat and life back home while you're at summer camp?

Here's how Kiwi AmeriCamp NZ applicants handle it.

You've worked out the money, you like the idea of trading a New Zealand winter for one spent somewhere warm, and then the practical questions start creeping in. What happens to your job while you're gone. Who takes over your lease. What do you do with your car, your gym membership, your Netflix account. Sorting out your life back home is one of the least glamorous parts of becoming a camp counsellor in America, but it's also one of the easiest, once you know what to actually do.

Your job

Camp season runs June to August, which lines up neatly with the New Zealand winter and, for a lot of applicants, a natural gap between jobs, study or seasonal work. If you're in a permanent role, talk to your employer early. Plenty of NZ workplaces are used to staff taking a season away, especially in hospitality, retail and outdoor industries, where a stint at summer camp in America is almost a rite of passage. Ask for unpaid leave rather than resigning if you want the job waiting when you're back, and be upfront about your return date once you have one.

Your flat

Ending a lease or finding someone to take over your room is genuinely the biggest logistical job on this list, so it pays to start early. Some counsellors give notice and move their things into storage or back to family for the winter. Others find a flatmate willing to cover the gap, or line up a new flat for when they land back in New Zealand. Either way, sort this out well before you're due to fly, since your departure date is locked in months ahead.

Bills, banking and everything else

Once you're at camp, food and accommodation are provided, so your day to day living costs mostly disappear for the season. Before you go, pause or cancel anything you won't be using, set up automatic payments for anything ongoing like a phone plan, and let your bank know you're travelling so your card doesn't get declined the first time you try to use it in America. A quick mail redirect or a family member checking your letterbox covers the rest.

The bit that actually matters

None of this is the reason people talk themselves out of applying, but it's often the reason they put it off another year. Ten weeks is a short, clearly bounded stretch of time, not your whole life on hold. You come back with money in your account (a guaranteed minimum of $2,250 USD for standard counsellors, or $2,350 USD if you're placed in a premium specialist role), a season of experience most employers rate highly, and a far better story than another winter spent watching Netflix on your day off.

Getting the timing right

The J1 visa is processed first come, first served, and background checks can take up to ten weeks to come through, so the earlier you apply, the more breathing room you give yourself to sort out your job and your flat properly.
