Can you go to summer camp in America with a friend?

04 September 2026

You've talked your best mate into it, or they've talked you into it.

Either way, there are now two of you googling the same thing at 11pm: can you actually do this together, or is a camp counsellor placement something you have to sign up for solo?

The short answer

Yes, you can apply to AmeriCamp NZ with a friend, and plenty of Kiwis do exactly that. What we can't do is promise you'll land at the same camp before you've both been through screening. Each application stands on its own, and camp matching depends on what a camp actually needs that season, not who you turned up with. Doing a working holiday USA season alongside someone you already know is a genuinely good reason to apply. It just isn't a shortcut around the process.

How applying together actually works

Applying with a friend doesn't mean one combined form. You'll each go through your own AmeriCamp Interview, a relaxed 20-minute conversation rather than a test, and your own background check, which can take up to ten weeks to clear. Once our Auckland team knows what you're both bringing to a summer camp USA placement, whether that's a specialist skill like sailing or coaching, or you're both solid general counsellors, we factor in a friend request during matching wherever a camp genuinely has room for it.

Why it's not a guarantee, and why that's actually fair

Camps build their rosters around specific gaps: a waterfront instructor here, two more general counsellors there, and those needs come first. If one of you is a perfect fit for a camp with only one spot left, holding you both back for a different camp with two spots isn't automatically the better outcome for either of you. We'd rather tell you that plainly than promise something before you've even applied that's genuinely outside our control.

Apply early if going together matters to you

The J1 visa runs first-come, first-served, and camps fill their rosters from the top of the queue. If landing the same camp as your mate matters to you, the biggest thing you can control is applying early, together, rather than one of you waiting to see what the other decides first. Two applications moving through screening at the same time, ideally early in the New Zealand winter before things fill up, gives our team the best shot at finding camps with room for both of you.

You won't be starting from zero either way

Even if you don't end up in the same cabin, you're not walking into a summer camp in America as the only new face. Emma, one of our counsellors, put it simply in a verified Trustpilot review: "Making friends is so easy too, everyone is in the same boat." Everyone at camp turned up not knowing most of the people around them. That's less true for you than most.

What if your friend backs out

Worth saying plainly: your application stands on its own. If your mate decides camp isn't for them, or doesn't get through screening, that has no bearing on your own placement. Nobody should talk themselves out of a summer camp in America because their plans got tangled up with someone else's decision.

What about attending a recruitment event?

AmeriCamp runs recruitment days, both virtual and in person, where camp directors meet applicants directly, and this is actually the easiest moment to raise a friend request. You're talking to the person building the roster in real time, so if you mention your friend's skills and a camp happens to need exactly that, a match can come together fast.

One thing worth being straight about: don't turn it into an ultimatum. Telling a director you'll only accept if your friend gets an offer too puts your own placement at risk, not just theirs. Camps are assessing you on your own merits first. Mention your friend genuinely, then let the process do its job rather than backing anyone into a corner.

Where to go from here

Whether you're applying as a pair or going in solo, the process is the same either way: a free application, an honest AmeriCamp Interview, and an Auckland team who'll tell you straight what's realistic for your situation. Bring a friend along if you've got one keen. Don't wait around for one if you don't.

AmeriCamp NZ is run out of Auckland by the NZ AmeriCamp team - International Working Holidays. We're backed by over 24 years of placing New Zealanders at summer camps across the USA. The application is free to start and our NZ team is with you every step of the way.
