How long is a summer camp counsellor season in America?

Eight weeks, give or take, and then some time that's all yours
You're staring at a calendar, wondering whether a summer camp in America means giving up your whole winter, your job, your flat and your sanity. It doesn't. Most camps run for around eight weeks, which is a lot less than people expect and a lot more than a holiday.
The short answer
Camp season runs June to August, which lines up neatly with the New Zealand winter. Most camps run an eight-week session, though the exact dates depend on your camp, and some run a little longer. Your camp will confirm its own dates, so check them before you book flights.
If you're planning around work, study or a lease, that's the number to hold onto. Two months is long enough to feel like a proper summer, short enough that it fits around real life.
What the weeks actually include
The season doesn't start with campers on day one. Most camps open with an orientation and training week, where you learn the safety procedures, meet your fellow counsellors and get comfortable with the grounds. We've covered that properly in our post on what happens during orientation week.
After that, it's campers, activities and cabin life until the last session wraps up. Then there's usually a short wind-down, packing up and goodbyes, because you'll have made friends you'd rather not leave.
Where the time comes from
Here's a question we hear a lot: can I fit this in around uni or a job? For a lot of Kiwis the answer is yes, because the season sits in our winter. Plenty of students use the mid-year break, and some people take unpaid leave or time between jobs.
None of this needs to be settled before you start your application. The application is free to start, and our Auckland team can talk through how your own dates might line up.
Your time after camp
When your camp contract finishes, your J1 visa gives you a 30 day grace period to travel within the United States. You can't work during it, but you can road trip, visit friends from camp or finally see a national park. We explain how that works in our post on travelling around America after your season ends.
Jennifer, in a verified Trustpilot review, described AmeriCamp as "Great communication very friendly and always willing to help however they can". That matters when you're trying to line up flights, orientation dates and grace period plans, because someone on our team can help you map it out.
What about the time before camp
This is the bit people underestimate. The season itself is about eight weeks, but the process before it takes longer. Background checks can take up to ten weeks, the J1 visa is processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and you'll need to attend your US Consulate appointment in Auckland.
That's why we suggest applying early. Starting sooner doesn't commit you to anything, and it gives you room to breathe if one step takes longer than planned. Remember that every applicant goes through the AmeriCamp Interview, a 20-minute conversation rather than a test, and a screening process, so nobody's placement is guaranteed in advance.
Is it long enough to be worth it?
Standard counsellors earn a guaranteed minimum of $2,250 USD for the season, and Premium counsellors earn a guaranteed minimum of $2,350 USD. Food and accommodation are provided by the camp, so most of that stays in your pocket.
Paddy put it plainly in a verified Trustpilot review: "Had a really good time everyone was really friendly". If you're worried that eight weeks will either drag or fly past, most counsellors tell us it's the second one.
Work out your dates
If you're a Kiwi weighing up a camp counsellor season this New Zealand winter, the useful move is to map out your own calendar first. Where does June to August sit in your year, and what would you need to move? Our NZ team can help you answer that, without any pressure.
AmeriCamp NZ is run out of Auckland by the NZ AmeriCamp team - International Working Holidays. We're backed by over 24 years of placing New Zealanders at summer camps across the USA. The application is free to start and our NZ team is with you every step of the way.
