It's the question everyone asks eventually, usually after they've already decided the idea sounds good.

What does a summer camp in America actually pay, and is it worth the flights, the paperwork, and giving up a chunk of your NZ winter?

Here's the honest breakdown.

The guaranteed minimum

Standard camp counsellors earn a guaranteed minimum of $2,250 USD for the season. If you've got a specialist skill camps are short on, you may qualify for a Premium placement, which comes with a guaranteed minimum of $2,350 USD.

That's a minimum, not a cap. Plenty of counsellors earn more depending on their camp, their role, and how the season goes. What matters is that the number on your contract is guaranteed before you leave New Zealand.

What "guaranteed" actually covers

Food and accommodation are provided by the camp for the whole season, so that wage isn't chipping away at rent or groceries while you're there. You're not covering flights or day-to-day living costs out of pocket the way you would on a normal working holiday.

Most counsellors come home having spent very little of what they earned, simply because there's nowhere to spend it. Camp is remote, structured, and every meal is sorted for you.

Who qualifies for Premium pay

Premium roles go to counsellors with specialist skills, things like sports coaching, music, lifeguarding, outdoor pursuits, or special needs experience. If that's you, it's worth mentioning early in your application rather than waiting to be asked.

Why the process starts with a J1 visa, not a job offer

Every counsellor placement runs through the J1 Exchange Visitor Visa, which is what makes the whole thing legal and properly supported rather than a grey-area cash job. It's processed on a first-come, first-served basis, so applying early genuinely matters. Background checks alone can take up to ten weeks to clear.

You'll need to be 18 by 1 June of your travel year, no exceptions, and you'll attend an in-person interview at the US Consulate in Auckland as part of the visa process. None of this is designed to catch you out. It's the same process every J1 camp counsellor in the country goes through.

What the application actually involves

This is where a lot of people hesitate. What if I'm not experienced enough? What if I pay the fees and don't get placed?

Is it worth it financially

If you're comparing it dollar for dollar against a summer of casual shifts at home, the maths gets interesting once you factor in free food and board for two to three months. You're not just earning, you're also not spending, which is the part that surprises most first-timers.

Add in the fact that camp season runs June to August, exactly when New Zealand is cold and grey, and the financial case starts to look less like a stretch and more like common sense.
