How to know if you're ready to be a camp counsellor in America

If you've been thinking about spending your NZ winter at a summer camp in America but keep talking yourself out of it, this one is for you.

The most common reason Kiwis don't apply is not logistics. It's not cost. It's not even timing.

It's the quiet voice that says: "What if I'm not good enough?"

Here's the truth about that voice - and what camps in the USA actually look for in a counsellor.

You don't need a perfect CV

Let's get this out of the way first. You do not need a teaching degree. You do not need a coaching qualification. You do not need to have worked with kids before.

What you need is a genuine willingness to show up, engage, and give a group of kids three months of real attention and care. That is the whole job description. Everything else is learnable on site.

Camps across America are staffed by people from all kinds of backgrounds - hospitality workers, retail staff, uni students, recent school leavers. What they have in common is not their CV. It's their attitude.

The Americamp Interview is not a test

This is the part that stops a lot of people from taking the next step. They imagine a formal interview with trick questions and judgement.

It's a 20-minute conversation with our NZ team. We want to know who you are, what you enjoy, what you're good at, and what kind of summer you're after. That's it.

We use that conversation to match you to a camp that actually fits you - not just any camp with an open spot. The interview exists to help you, not to filter you out.

If we genuinely don't think we can place you well, we'll tell you honestly. But in over 24 years of placing Kiwis at US summer camps, that almost never happens. You've come this far!

Signs you're ready

You don't need to tick every box. But if several of these sound like you, camp counselling in America is worth serious consideration.

- You're good with people. You don't have to be an extrovert, but you need to be able to engage with kids and colleagues across a full day without running out of patience.

- You're adaptable. Camp life throws curveballs. Weather changes, plans change, kids have bad days. If you can roll with uncertainty without falling apart, you'll thrive.

- You're looking for something more than a job. The counsellors who get the most out of their summer are the ones who go in wanting the full experience - not just the pay cheque.

- You're ready to be away from home for a season. Eight to ten weeks is long enough to feel the distance. If you're someone who genuinely wants a non touristy experience in America, that stretch of time becomes an asset rather than a challenge.

Signs you might want to wait

Camp counselling is not for everyone, and there's no shame in that.

- If you're not yet 18 by 1 June of your travel year, you'll need to wait until the following season - that's a hard J1 visa requirement with no exceptions.

- If you're looking for a relaxed working holiday with lots of downtime, camp is probably not the right fit. It's full-on, rewarding, and occasionally exhausting in the best possible way.

- If you're expecting a holiday with a bit of work on the side, you'll likely find the reality a surprise. Go in with realistic expectations and you'll love it. Go in expecting a resort, and you won't.

What specialist skills can do for you

If you do have specific qualifications or experience - sports coaching, music, special needs support, lifeguarding, arts, drama - you may qualify for Americamp's Premium programme.

Premium counsellors are matched to camps that need their specific skills and earn a guaranteed minimum of $2,350 USD for the season, compared to $2,250 USD for general counsellors. Food and accommodation are included at all levels, so most of your earnings are yours to keep.

The one thing every great counsellor has

We've placed hundreds of Kiwis at summer camps in America over the past 24 years. The ones who come home with the biggest stories, the strongest friendships, and the clearest sense of what they're capable of are not always the most qualified.

They're the ones who went in open. Who said yes to things that were uncomfortable. Who showed up for their kids even on the hard days.

That's not a skill you put on a CV. It's a choice you make every morning.

If that sounds like you, you're ready.

Americamp NZ is operated by International Working Holidays, Auckland-based and Kiwi-focused. We're the NZ arm of Americamp - backed by over 24 years of placing New Zealanders at summer camps across the USA. The application is free to start and our NZ team is with you every step of the way.
