What's the accommodation actually like at a US summer camp?

Somewhere between googling "camp counsellor America" and actually applying, most people picture the same thing: a wooden bunk, ten kids, and absolutely nowhere to put your stuff.

It's a fair question to ask before you commit a New Zealand winter to it. Here's the straight answer, not the brochure version.

Where you'll actually sleep

If you're placed as a cabin counsellor, yes, you'll usually be sleeping in the same cabin as your group of campers, with a bunk of your own at one end.

It's not private in the way a flat with your mates is private, and there's no point pretending otherwise.

Specialist and activity-based roles often work differently.

Sailing instructors, lifeguards, and other Premium counsellors are sometimes housed in separate staff cabins or shared staff housing, away from camper cabins, with more of their own space in the evenings.

Which setup you get depends entirely on the camp and the role, which is exactly why camp matching happens before you fly, not after.

It's basic, and nobody's dressing that up

Camp accommodation is functional. Think wooden cabins or dorm-style bunks, shared bathrooms, and a lot of communal space, not a hotel or a backpacker upgrade.

If you need your own ensuite and blackout curtains to function, a summer camp in America is going to be a stretch.

What you get instead is built-in company every single evening, which sounds small until you're three weeks in and realise you haven't had a lonely night yet.

Most counsellors say the trade-off, less privacy for more connection, is one of the things they didn't expect to love.

Food and downtime are sorted for you

Food and accommodation are both provided by your camp for the full season, so you're not hunting for a flat or budgeting for groceries the way you would on a normal working holiday USA. Meals are canteen-style rather than fine dining, but they're covered, and that matters more than it sounds like it would when you're trying to make a summer's wage go further.

You'll also get proper time off built into the schedule, usually a day or half-day each week, plus staff-only spaces to retreat to once campers are asleep. It's not zero downtime. It's just downtime that looks different to a normal job.

What about wifi and staying in touch with home

Honestly, patchy. Camps in more remote settings often have limited wifi, sometimes only in a staff building, and phone signal can be unreliable depending on the state.

It's one of the more commonly named frustrations from AmeriCamp alumni, right alongside homesick kids and long days.

It's also one of the reasons the summer feels like it does.

Being properly unreachable for stretches of the day is unusual for most 20-somethings, and most counsellors come home saying it did them good rather than harm.
