If you've landed here after googling "what is Americamp", you're not alone

and it's a fair question to ask before you commit a chunk of your NZ winter to it.

The short version

Americamp is a programme that places young people at summer camps across the USA on a J1 Exchange Visitor Visa, working as camp counsellors for eight to ten weeks. Americamp NZ is the New Zealand arm of that global programme, operated locally by International Working Holidays out of Auckland, with over 24 years of experience placing Kiwis specifically.

So when you apply through us, you're not applying to some faceless overseas platform. You're applying through a local team who understands the NZ side of the process, timed to line up with our winter.

How camp counsellor placement actually works

You start with a free application, then move through an interview and screening process before being matched to a specific camp. The Americamp Interview is a relaxed 20-minute conversation, not a test, used to work out what kind of camp and role would actually suit you.

From there, background checks and visa processing kick off, and you're matched to a camp based on your skills, experience and what camps are looking for that season. It's a genuine two-way match, not a lucky dip.

What you'd actually be doing at camp

Camp counsellor work varies a lot depending on the camp and your skills. Some counsellors lead specific activities like sailing, sports coaching, music or outdoor pursuits. Others take on general counsellor roles, living alongside a cabin of kids, running activities, and being the reliable adult in their week.

Sophie, who worked as a special needs camp counsellor in Iowa, described it as "an opportunity to help other people while having the best summer and experiencing a different country." That's a fairly accurate summary of what most counsellors end up saying about it.

What you get out of it

Food and accommodation are provided by the camp for the whole season, and standard counsellors earn a guaranteed minimum of $2,250 USD, with premium counsellors on specialist skills earning a guaranteed minimum of $2,350 USD. Camp season runs June to August, which lines up almost perfectly with the New Zealand winter, so you're not taking time off anything except the cold.

Beyond the pay, it's genuine work experience in the USA, on a proper working holiday visa, with a season's worth of stories and a CV line that actually stands out. It's also a straightforward way to travel without needing a big pile of savings first.

Who runs it, and why that matters

Americamp itself is part of Intrax, an exchange company that's been running international visa J1 programmes for decades. In New Zealand, the programme is delivered by International Working Holidays, the Auckland and Christchurch based team who handle your J1 visa sponsorship, insurance and support from application through to landing home again. But once you 're in USA the US AmeriCamp Team tak eover supporting your whole time at summer camp in America.

Our local layer makes the difference. It means when you have a question about your visa, your fees, or where you'll actually be placed, you're emailing or messaging a real person in Auckland, not waiting on a generic overseas support inbox.

Is it for you?

If you're 18 by 1 June of your travel year, keen on a working holiday in the USA, and not fussed about spending your NZ winter doing something more interesting than another season on the couch, it's worth looking into. You don't need to be an elite athlete or a trained teacher. You need to be reliable, good with people, and genuinely up for it.

Applying costs nothing, and background checks can take up to ten weeks, so it's worth starting early even if you're still deciding.

Americamp NZ is operated by International Working Holidays, Auckland-based and Kiwi-focused. We're the NZ arm of Americamp - backed by over 24 years of placing New Zealanders at summer camps across the USA. The application is free to start and our NZ team is with you every step of the way.
