What to expect in your AmeriCamp interview

You've filled out the application. You've thought about camp more than you'd like to admit. And now there's one thing standing between you and a summer at camp in America: the interview.

If your stomach drops a bit at the word "interview", you're not alone. Most people picture a panel, a script, and someone waiting to catch them out. The Americamp Interview isn't any of that.

It's a conversation, not a test

The Americamp Interview is a 20-minute chatwith someone from our NZ team, not an exam with right and wrong answers. It's there to find out who you are, what you're like with kids, and what kind of camp would actually suit you.

Nobody is trying to trip you up. The whole point is matching you to the right camp, not weeding you out for the sake of it. If you're the kind of person who says yes to things, gets on with people, and doesn't mind a long day, you're already most of the way there.

What actually gets asked

Expect questions about why you want to go, what you're good at, and how you'd handle a homesick eight-year-old at two in the morning. If you've got a specialist skill, sports coaching, lifeguarding, music, outdoor pursuits, this is where it's worth mentioning it clearly, since it's what qualifies you for a Premium placement.

There's no dress code beyond looking like you made an effort, and no trick questions hiding in there. You'll also get the chance to ask your own questions about camp life, the J1 visa process, and what the next ten weeks look like.

How to prepare without overthinking it

You don't need to rehearse a script. Have a think beforehand about why camp appeals to you and what you'd bring to a group of kids, then just talk like a person. A quiet room and decent WiFi will do more for you than any prepared speech.

If you're nervous about not having "enough" experience, that's normal, and it's rarely the deciding factor. Plenty of counsellors get placed with no formal childcare background at all, because camps are just as interested in attitude as they are in a CV.

Why the interview exists at all

The interview isn't a hoop to jump through for the sake of it. It protects the kids at camp, it protects you from ending up somewhere that's a bad fit, and it's part of what makes the J1 Exchange Visitor Visa a properly regulated programme rather than a grey-area summer job.

That structure is also why applying early matters. Background checks can take up to ten weeks, visa processing runs first-come first-served, and the whole pipeline moves faster the sooner you're in it. What happens after the interview

Once the interview is done, our NZ team gets to work matching you to a camp based on what came up in the conversation. From there it's visa sponsorship, placement confirmation, and then the genuinely fun part, packing for a summer camp in America during what would otherwise be another grey New Zealand winter.

None of this guarantees a placement before you've been through the interview and screening process, and we won't pretend otherwise. What it does mean is that if you're accepted, you're accepted because you're a genuine fit, not because you ticked a box.
